The Story
The sculpture was inspired by the women and ancestors in Desiree's family, and by the idea of family history as a living tree whose roots continue to nourish the present.
Whispers from the Past began as a meditation on lineage. The tree form holds the women of Desiree's family within its structure, turning ancestry into something living, visible, and rooted. Each silhouette suggests a presence carried forward, an inheritance of strength, tenderness, memory, and survival.
Fabricated in steel, the piece moves between portrait and landscape. The women are not placed beside the tree, they are the tree, shaping its trunk, branches, and inner spaces. That transformation gives the work its emotional center, presenting family history not as something distant, but as the framework that continues to support new life.
In its final installation, the sculpture becomes a bridge between generations, joining metal, color, and handmade figures into a single reflection on heritage. The work honors the ancestors who remain with us in gesture, story, and spirit, and invites viewers to consider the family voices that still echo inside their own becoming.
